Nathan Conway was not four months old when Ross Young led the underdog Eastern Kings Wildcats to victory over the Charlottetown Blue Bombers in the first ever Potato Bowl during a freezing sleet storm at MacAdam Field at UPEI. Eighteen years later Conway is a defensive captain and all star on a Wildcats squad coached by his father Eric Conway, and represents the last age group to be born before the PEI Tackle Football League reformed in 1991. The Wildcats finished the first generation the same way they started, with a victory over the now Charlottetown Island Construction Colonels on Sunday afternoon at the turf field in Summerside.
The afternoon did not start out promising for the Wildcats as the league touchdown leader Jeff Hillier lived up to his billing with a touchdown reception from Justin Murphy, the point after by Cody MacRae had the Colonels up 7-0 just 4 minutes in. Just into the second quarter Souris replied with a touchdown run by rising star Jonathan Gallant, the point after by kicker Drew MacInnis was good to tie the game at 7 each. Hillier continued his attack with a touchdown run the left the hearts of a large contingent of Souris faithful in their collective throats, the point after was good leading to a 14-7 Charlottetown lead. Not to be outdone Jonathan Gallant finds the end zone on the second play from scrimmage, MacInnis' kick was good to even things at 14-14. Then the Souris defense showed up, the relentless pressure they put on Justin Murphy pays off with a fumble that was returned by Jonathan Gallant. The convert was good to give the Wildcats the lead for the first time in the game, at which point they never looked back. The ensuing Colonels drive stalled and when the Colonels punted from deep in their own end it was 2008 Potato Bowl MVP Tyler Gallant who returned the punt all the way for a touchdown, MacInnis makes the extra point and suddenly the Wildcats have a 28-14 lead. The Souris defense finally adjusted to the Colonels attack and when the Wildcats regained possession on an interception by 2008 League MVP Ben MacIsaac, a punishing drive featuring Dawson Burke and Paul MacDonald was capped by a 2 yard touchdown run by Jonathan Gallantwith 1.2 seconds on the clock. His fourth TD capped a wild second quarter and sent the Wildcats into the break on a high note and a 35-14 lead, the grim reality of the depth on the Souris team setting in on the Colonels.
They would not go easily, however, as shortly after the intermission it was Jeff Hillier with his third touchdown of the day, MacRae made the convert to trim the lead to 35-21. Souris reponded immediately when a Drew MacInnis reverse set up a touchdown strike by Wildcats quarterback Graeme Forrest to rookie slotback Brandon Ching, MacInnis made the extra point, score 42-21. Tyler Gallant then added to the lead when he punched the ball in from the 1 yard line on the next Souris drive, the convert was good to make the lead 49-21. Gallant intercepted a Murphy pass later in the frame and returned it for a TD, marking the second time this season he scored a rushing, kick return and interception touchdown in the same game. Souris received a penalty after the score pushing the convert back 10 yards where Drew MacInnis missed his only point after of the day and finishing the scoring at 55-21. The fourth quarter yielded no points as a stingy Wildcats
defense kept the Colonels at bay. The win marks the end of a perfect season for the Wildcats, their second in a row, but also makes a strong case for MVP Jeff Hillier. Offensive player of the game was Jeff Hillier and defensive player of the game was Jonathan Gallant.
