In Semi-final action this weekend:
The Souris Wildcats continued their march to the Potato Bowl with a 35-15 playoff victory over the Summerside Cooke Insurance Clippers Sunday afternoon in Rollo Bay. The undermanned Summerside squad came ready to play, giving the defending champs all they could handle in the second half. The afternoon began with a touchdown run by Jonathan Gallant, one of his three on the day, the point after by Drew MacInnis was good, staking the Wildcats to a 7-0 lead. In the second quarter Dawson Burke punched it in from the 2 yard line to increase the lead, 14-0 Souris. The Summerside offense struggled early, a missed field goal midway through the frame accounted for their only shot at scoring. Dawson Burke then punted the ball through the end zone to bring the score to 15-1. Jonathan Gallant rounded out the first half scoring taking the handoff and bouncing outside for a 15 yard score. The MacInnis convert was good to land the halftime score at 22-1 for the Wildcats.
The third quarter was a different matter as Summerside quarterback Matt Rice turned it on with a touchdown strike to Alex Lutes, the Clippers then opted to go for a 2 point convert where Rice hooked up with Patrick LaFrank, closing the gap to 22-9. Later in the quarter a fumbled punt by the Clippers was recovered by the Wildcats Alex Forrest, who then promptly took the first play from scrimmage into the endzone, the extra point hit the crossbar, score 28-9. The Clippers answered right back as Matt Rice found his brother Kris Rice on an impressive catch and run play, once again the Clippers went for 2 extra points but were denied by the Wildcats, score 28-15. The third quarter scoring parade continued as Jonathan Gallant capped off his afternoon with a 60 yard touchdown run along the sideline, the point after by MacInnis was good bringing the score to 35-15. The fourth quarter was a stalemate as neither defense surrendered any points, with fumbles by both sides stalling any offensive momentum.
