Colonels tame Wolves

Island Construction Colonels tame Cornwall Timber Wolves 19-9

Colonels Tame WolvesThe score and play in this game does not indicate how close of a game this was. This win for the Colonels was a game of big plays. The Wolves controlled the ball on offense but could not put the points on the board. The Colonels defense would bend but not break. The Wolves were missing their two big offensive weapons Tom Lund and Mat Harris whom are both away playing rugby. Ben Thompson filled in and did an excellent job with hard running up the middle, finding the open holes.

Dan Banks of the Colonels ran in from the 2 yard line for 1st and only TD of the 1st half. 1st half ends 7-0 for the Colonels. The Wolves finally got on the board late in the 3rd quarter with QB Mike Hoy hooking up with Seth Currie for a 15 TD reception. 3rd quarter ends 7-7. Early in the 4th quarter the Wolves with the strong leg of Kyle Dubois punted twice for single points giving the lead to the Wolves 9-7. The turning point in the game came late in the 4th quarter where the Colonels caught the dependable Wolves defense sleeping and pulled off a well executed run-reserve. For the second week in a row, David Woiken of the Colonels became the big game maker, he ran the reverse for a 75 yard TD and put the Colonels in position to win the game. Last week, he returned a kick off for an 80 yard TD run. With the missed convert, score was now 13-9. The tide had turned. The Colonels defense lead by Cameron Hill would not let the Wolves respond. Late in the 4th quarter the Colonels clinched the game with a 3 yard TD run by Nick Doucette, score 19-9.

There were some standout defensive notables with Cameron Hill and Adam St.Pierre both getting key interceptions and David Cooke having 3 open field tackles and assisted on three others.

The Colonels have earned the right to play the McKenna Souris Wild Cats for the Island Championship, the covenanted Potato Bowl. Colonels started the season 0-3 but could just as easily been 3-0. The Colonels certainly seem to be on a mission and Souris will have their hands full. This should be a great game.
