Wolves edge Colonels by a Point : 53-52

October 10th, 2009

What a night for football, cold and wet with the wind driving too hard to tee up the ball.  Not good for extra points but with a 105 points scored it was an action packed game. The Colonels were the first on the board with just seconds remaining in the first quarter when Andrew Dukens ran it in from the 5, the kick was good and the first quarter was Colonels 7, Timberwolves 0.

The second quarter:
Phillip Lanthier ran one in from the 35 to put the T-Wolves on the board, the kick was wide.  On the kick-off Lanthier booted the ball into the end-zone where Spencer Sweet ran up and recovered the ball for a second T-Wolves touchdown and Mitchell MacDonald kicked the extra point, score 13-7 for the Wolves.

Jeff Hillier ran one for the Colonels and the kick was good.  Five minutes left in the half and the Colonels lead 14-13.  The Colonels recovered the kick on the Wolves 45 and on the second down Hillier ran it in for his second TD of the night. Moments later Brent Simmonds snagged an interception and scored the Colonels 4th TD.  Both kicks were good making it 28-13 Colonels.  Lanthier came back and put another rushing TD on the board for the Timberwolves.  The kick was blocked. Lanthier then kicked off pinning the Colonels in their own end and with only three minutes on the clock the Wolves defense took control and forced a 4th down that was unsuccessful. The Timberwolves got the ball back and ran in what they thought was another Phillip Lanthier TD. Instead, he was called down on the 1 with no time remaining in the half .

Ten seconds into the second half, Hillier score d a TD on a 60 yard run, the kick was blocked by Wolves' Thomas McCabe making the score 34-19 . Lanthier replied for the Timberwolves but an attempted 2 point conversion failed. 34-25 Colonels. Hillier came right back and returned the kick for the Colonels and the score was 40-25 for the Colonels after another blocked extra point .  Lanthier ran in another for the Timberwolves and the kick was again wide.  Hillier answered with a 75 yard run and the kick was blocked. 46-31 Colonels. Cody Keenan ran in a touchdown from mid-field for the Timberwolves and the ball was fumbled at the snap - again no extra point.  46-37 Colonels. Lanthier ran in another from the 5 and then passed to Jacob Simmonds to score the 2 point conversion.  46-45 Colonels The ball was turned over on the Timberwolves 5 yard line and they could not move the ball up the field.  They turned it back over to the Colonels on the 10.  A pass into the end-zone was caught by Taylor Doyle for another Colonels TD making it 52-45 for the Colonels. The kick was again blocked by the Timberwolves stout defense keeping the game within one score. There was just over two minutes left in the game when the Wolves got the ball back in the hands of their offense. They marched their way up the field with great running from Cody Keenan and catches by Jacob Simmons and Chris Dowbiggin. With 17 .3 seconds on the clock Phillip Lanthier connected with Dowbiggin in the end-zone to bring the score to within one point.  52 for the Colonels and 51 for the Wolves.

Timberwolves Coach, Jamie Gosbee, took the teams final remaining timeout and asked the offense, "You boys want to go for a tie or the win?" The offense lined up for the do-or-die two-point convert and quarterback Phillip Lanthier ran it in to score the conversion and it was 53 - 52 for the Timberwolves.  On the ensuing kickoff the ball took a backwards hop and Timberwolves, Lucas Aten recovered the kick. The Wolves offense went back out onto the field to take a knee and it was all over.

Wolves Head Coach, Jamie Gosbee, who has played football for the last ten years said, "It was the greatest game I have ever been a part of. Our defense stepped up and made the plays when they had to, our special teams made big plays, and our offense simply couldn't be stopped. This could quite possibly be the greatest game played in PEITFL history."
