Colonels Clip the Clippers

The Island Construction Colonels clip the Cooke Clippers at home, 22-13

The Colonels with their new QB, Chris Wigmore, on the opening drive connected with Adam MacDonald for a 22 yard TD, covert good, Colonels take early lead 7-0. Shortly later with Clippers deep in their own end on 4th down play knees the punt in their own end zone which gave the Colonels 2 points. On the Colonels next possession #21 of colonels made a back breaking TD run from his own 35 yard line & convert was good.

The Colonels were a different team, a revamped offense and a solid defense stopped the clippers in their tracks. With the new look offense kept the Clippers defense guessing the whole 1st quarter. Before the end of the 1st quarter the Clippers were down 16-0.

The one bright light in the 1st half was Clippers QB Justin Murphy hooking up with Alex Lutes for a 65 yard TD, convert good. Colonels lead 16-7

Clippers now pull within 9 points of the Colonels. With the Colonels on the march again, the Clippers defense stood their ground with great open field tackles coming from Patrick LeFrank an Evan Gallant holding the Colonels scoreless in the 2nd quarter.

1st half ends 16-7.

The second half of the game was dominated by the Colonel’s Jeff Hillier’s running game. Rain started and made the passing game difficult. With the Colonels defense shutting down the Clippers running game it gave rookie QB, Justin Murphy little help. With the rain coming down it made the ball difficult to throw on both sides of the field.

For most of the 3rd quarter the Clippers were pinned deep in their own end. The Clippers defense stopped the Colonels on a 4th down gamble and took over on the Clippers 2 yard line. On the next set of downs the Colonels were ready to score again from the Clipper 7 yard line but Ben Person made a great read and picked off QB, Chris Wigmore’s pass at the Clippers 2 yard line.

The Clippers mounted a trying come back but fumbled the ball on their own 15 yard line. The Colonels took full advantage with Chris Wigmore thowing a 15 yard TD to a wide open Adam McDonald, covert missed, Colonels at the end of the 3rd quarter leads 22-7.

The Clippers efforts fell short and could not get past the strong play of the Colonels defense, with great reads from Morgan McLean, picked off Justin Murphy to put the Colonels on the Clippers 25 yard line. The Clippers defense held and took over on their own 15 yard line on downs.

Finally, the Clippers all star running back #22 (Brock Lamers), broke lose and rumbled for a 85 yard TD run, bring the Clippers within reach but only minutes left in the game. The Clippers went for the two point conversion but missed. Score 22-13.

The Clippers recovered the kick off but time ran out, Colonels win, 22-13.

It was the best showing of the Colonels this year; they were looking like the Champions from last year.
