Wildcats hold off Colonels 28-21

October 18th, 2009

ROLLO BAY: The defending champion Souris Wildcats had a scare put into them by a vastly improved Colonels team Sunday afternoon before a large crowd in Rollo Bay.  The game started well for Souris with Dawson Burke opening the scoring in the first quarter taking it into the end zone from 12 yards out, point after by Drew MacInnis was good.  Later in the quarter MacInnis missed a 45 yard field goal attempt but the Colonels conceded in the end zone to make the score 8-0.  In the 2nd quarter Tyler Gallant punched it in from the 2 yard line to increase the lead, convert was good.  Score at halftime was 15-0.

In the third quarter the dynamic duo of Justin Murphy and Jeff Hillier stepped up for the Colonels with Murphy scrambling on a broken play and finding Hillier for the touchdown, the convert was good making the score 15-7.  But the Wildcats replied with a good drive that ended with a touchdown pass to Nathan Conway from quarterback Graeme Forrest, who had a solid afternoon under center for Souris, the point after was missed, making the score 21-7.  Hillier came right back for the Colonels taking the handoff and making an incredible solo effort up the sideline to bring the Colonels back within one score at 21-14.  But Souris wasn't giving up either as Jonathan Gallant took the handoff on his own 36 yard line, finding a hole and turning on the jets to regain a two score lead, the point after was good making the score 28-14.  Once again the Colonels came back, this time a Souris fumble proved costly as Murphy eluded would be tacklers in the backfield,  sprinted toward the sideline and somehow found a wide open Jeff Hillier who caught the pass for his third touchdown of the day, the point after brought the score to 28-21.  The Colonels then attempted an onside kick, Souris was unable to recover and the ball bounced off a Colonels player to go out of bounds giving them the ball with less than a minute remaining.  But Tyler Gallant saved the day, intercepting Murphy and returning the ball to deep in the Colonels end where time expired.

WildCats fight off Colonels

ROLLO BAY – The Charlottetown Island Construction Colonels put up a fight but went down 28-21 to the undefeated Souris Wildcats Sunday afternoon in P.E.I. Tackle Football league action.

Colonels head coach Mike MacNeil says the second half made the difference for his team - namely players Justin Murphy and Jeff Hillier – but there are still things to work on.

"Our defence couldn't stop Souris's running game," MacNeil said.

Hillier says if the Colonels could hold back the Wildcats running the ball then they could have won the game.

"The intensity just wasn't there," Hillier said. "Guys were coming through our defensive line and we weren't blocking them."

In the first quarter, Dawson Burke had a touchdown to make it 7-0 Souris.

The second quarter saw Charlottetown concede a point off a punt making it 8-0 at half time.

Souris's Tyler Gallant made it to the endzone in the third quarter before Charlottetown's Jeff Hillier responded with a touchdown putting the score 15-7.

In the fourth quarter, Nathan Conway scored a touchdown for Souris followed by a failed kick for the extra point. Jeff Hillier then made a touchdown for Charlottetown responded to by Souris's Jonathan Gallant touching the endzone. Hillier then made one final touchdown before Charlottetown made an onside kick to keep possession of the ball. Souris made an interception and kept the ball until the clock ran out.
