Island Construction Colonels defeat the Cornwall Timberwolves 21-13
This was a game of big plays for the Colonels, they kept finding ways win while the Wolves kept finding ways to lose. With the accurate passing of the Colonels QB Sean Curley and the five turn over’s by the Wolves gave Colonels the Win.
David Woikin for the Colonels had an 80 yard kick off return for a TD along with TD catches by Kieran Goodwin and the game clincher by Dan MacAleer. The Colonels defense would bend but not crack with the strong play of Cameron Hill & Evan Giddings and timely interceptions with the most important by Richard Pelliser-Lush late in the 4th quarter; it was the turning point in this hard hitting game.
At the end of the 1st quarter it was 7-7; the Colonels took the lead in the 2nd quarter and would give it up. Colonels went into half time up 14-7 with no scoring in the 3rd quarter but early in the 4th quarter Ben Thompson of the Wolves punched it from the 2 yard line but with a poor snap the extra point was no good. Colonels now lead 14-13. Late in the 4th quarter Sean Curley hooked up with Dan MacAleer for the Colonels to put the game away.
The TimberWolves controlled the time of possession throughout the game but could not execute and put the ball in the End-zone. The Wolves got away from their strength, running Mattie Harris on the outside and power runner Tommy Lund up the middle. The Wolves continued with their strong defense lead by Seth Currie, Jordon Paynter and David Cooke.
The Colonels now face the Timber Wolves in the Semi-Finals which will be the rubber match and bragging rights on Friday, Nov 3, 7:00PM at the Cornwall Field. The winner will move on to play the Souris Wild Cats in the Potato Bowl the following week. Had the Wolves defeated the Colonels the Cornwall TimberWolves would have finished 1st but with the loss the Souris Wild Cats claim 1st place and a bye to the Potato Bowl final.
