Clippers surprise Colonels

Clippers 14 Colonels 9

The Cooke Insurance Clippers surprise Island Construction Colonels 14-9 by closing down the Colonels offense & getting their first win. Only in their second game the Clippers looked like a veteran team but standing tall on defense by recovering three fumbles and two interceptions. The Clippers blitzed often to keep the Colonels passing game in check.

Clippers QB, Justin Murphy continues to look cool under pressure and lead his offense up and down the field. Justin Murphy also doubles as Clippers kicker making two field goals from 15 & 25 yards, missing one from 35 yards but got single point. The Clippers running game with Joey Dugay & Brock Lamers made the difference on offense, a great one – two punch combination.

The Colonels scored their only TD in the first quarter, Drew Reid through to Adam McDonald, convert missed. It was followed by Colonels field goal late in 2nd quarter but that was all the mighty Clippers defense would give up.

The first half ended 9-6 for the Colonels

No scoring in the third quarter but Clippers were pressing, Joey Dugay broke through and ran for 70 yard game to Colonels 12 yard line. Looking for the Clippers first major score Clippers QB Justin Murphy looked to the passing game but Morgan MacLean of the Colonels made a great read and made the interception and returned the ball to the Colonels 30 yard line.

The forth quarter was controlled by the Clippers with Brock Lamers late in 4th quarter breaking lose and making a great 50 yard TD run by going around and through Colonels players. Convert made by Justin Murphy. Clippers took their first lead of the game, one they would not give up.

With Clippers leading 14-9 late in the forth quarter, it looked like the Colonels were mounting one last march but again the Clippers defense continued pressure on Colonels Drew Reid which allowed Charlie McCardle to make the game winning interception and a big upset for the Clippers.
