Post 25-13 Win Friday Night over Timber Wolves
The defending champion McKenna Bros Wildcats continued their winning ways in the P.E.I. Tackle Football League before a capacity crowd at the Town of Cornwall Multi-Purpose Field complex on Friday night with a well earned 25-13 win over the Charlottetown Timber Wolves. The defending champions showed superior tackling and blocking skills in overcoming an early 7-6 lead by the host Timber Wolves to take a commanding lead in the league standings and setting up next Saturday's game between the Timber Wolves and Charlottetown Colonels as a key early season indicator of possible challengers.
After the Timber Wolves took the lead in the first quarter the Wild Cats responded with a Marcus Dunphy run off right tackle off from 6 yards out to take a 12-7 lead at half time. Souris had the wind to lead off the second half and after the teams traded punts Dennis Mahar went of right tackle for a 65 yard run to the Timber Wolves Six-yard line. Three plays later the Wild Cats faced a fourth and seven but Mahar went off left tackle to extend the Wild Cats lead to 18-7. "That was the turning point" said Souris coach Eric Conway who said "We are pleasantly surprised to be 2-0" who lamented his squads failure to complete a pass in the game. "We need a better turn out during the week at practice if we are going to keep our spot at the top" said Coach Conway while acknowledging the strong play of his defense particularly Line backer Curtis MacKenzie.
For the Timber Wolves coach Mark MacDougall stated his club was a little bit unprepared for the magnitude of the game. " I think a lot of our players were not ready for the magnitude of the speed and intensity which comes with a football game" said Coach MacDougall. He was pleased however with the effort of quarterback Matt Harris who ran for one touch down and completed a pass for a TD to Alex Lutes late in the game. " We dressed 41 guys for the game and rotated everyone in " said Coach MacDougall who clearly expects a better game this weekend.

League play continues under the light next Saturday evening at UPEI between the Charlottetown Colonels and the Timber Wolves as the two traditional rivals seek out their first win of the season.
