TIMBERWOLVES GAIN CONTROVERSIAL WIN IN CHARLOTTETOWN RIVALRY GAME OVER COLONELS IN P.E.I. TACKLE FOOTBALL LEAGUE PLAY
Matt Harris lead the Charlottetown Timber Wolves to a 14-10 victory over the Island Construction Colonels in a hard hitting and entertaining game played before a large crowd Saturday night at UPEI field. Harris started the game with an 85 yard touchdown run on the opening kick off and completed a number of key passes as the Timber Wolves earned their first league victory in two seasons.
Harris who ran for over 100 yards and completed 7 passes for 83 yards also had two touchdowns called back for penalties and was the star of the night as he electrified the fans every time he had the ball but Timber Wolves coach Mark MacDougall gave credit to his whole team. “After last week’s loss to Souris we talked to the players about how on every play they have to each do their job” said MacDougall who continued “ This was a close and physical game as it always is between the two of us and it usually comes down to the little mistakes”.
After the opening score the Colonels controlled field position and in the second quarter Quarterback Sean Curley hooked up with Adam MacDonald on a 60 yard catch and run play to the Timber Wolves 8. The next play the two finished off the drive with a completion into the end zone. David Waiken extra point gave the Colonel’s the lead at half time.
In the third quarter the Colonels continued to control both sides of the field and were driving for a touchdown inside the Timber Wolves five yard line when an illegal procedure penalty moved the ball back and the Colonels had to settle for a 20 yard David Waiken field goal and a 10-6 lead. “We would have liked to have scored a touchdown there” said Colonels coach Carl Adams who expressed frustration with the penalties his team picked up. “We are still making mistakes and we have to learn to shake off some of the calls which go against us. Ryan Feldman ran the ball well for us and Cameron Hill was strong on defense and we will need that effort next week against Souris” said Coach Adams.
In the fourth quarter Matt Harris continued to star when he completed a 30 yard pass to Alex Lutes to the Colonels 10. Two plays later Thomas Lund went three yards off tackle to give the Timber Wolves the lead. A Harris pass to Lutes for 2 points gave the Timber Wolves a 14-10 lead.
It was on the ensuing drive that the game’s major controversy arose. With time running down and the Colonels driving inside the Timber Wolves 20 Quarterback Sean Curley through a pass into the end zone on second down. A Colonel was called for what clearly appeared to be offensive pass interference. The penalty assessed however was not 15 yards and loss of down to the Colonels but loss of possession giving the Timber Wolves the ball. Many in the Colonel portion of the crowd questioned the call and rule interpretation which halted their winning drive. The Timber Wolves then ran out the clock to seal the victory and earn city bragging rights.
League play continues next week as the Island Construction Colonels visit Souris to line up against the league leading McKenna Bros Wildcats.
