CORNWALL - It was a rainy night and it got a whole lot colder in a hurry for the Cornwall Timberwolves as they went down to a 28-0 defeat to the Island Construction Colonels friday night in the first game of the 2009 P.E.I. Tackle Football League season.
The Colonels scored a touchdown mid-way into the first quarter and kept rolling - scoring seven points in each quarter.
Colonels new head coach Mike MacNeil couldn't be happier with his team - who went winless in the 2008 season.
"I told the guys up front if we dominate the line of scrimmage we can do it. (And) we dominated the line of scrimmage; we ran the ball well," MacNeil said after the victory.
He says running back Seth Hood had a lot to do with getting the momentum rolling, while Hood says the teams experience made the difference.
"We have more veteran players," Hood said. "We never won a game last year so it's nice to win one."
The teams defence played a crucial role to, Hood points out.
"The scariest part in the game was when (The Timberwolves) were at our one yard line - in the third quarter - but our defence came up big and held them off."
It's only game one but coach MacNeil is optimistic moving forward.
"If we play like this, it's gonna be a good season."
