ROLLO BAY - The Souris Wildcats proved again why they are the defending P.E.I. Tackle Football Potato Bowl champions Sunday afternoon in Rollo Bay as they downed the Cooke Insurance Summerside Clippers 31-20.
Summerside head coach Jeremy Hern says some inexperience in the roster had a lot to do with the loss but he was happy with his defence.
"If it wasn't for our defence we wouldn't have had much," Hern said.
Souris head coach Eric Conway says that although his team had 10 more players, Summerside's defence kept his team on their toes.
"(Summerside) came up with small numbers and fought back, and gave us a good game," Conway said.
The first quarter saw Souris grab an early lead - as Jonathan Gallant scored a touchdown, and Summerside knelt in their end zone to concede two points - making it 9-0.
In the second quarter, Souris kept the ball rolling - scoring a touchdown (Nathan Conway) to make it 16-0. But Summerside started to show signs of life, fighting off a Souris attempt to score a touchdown late in the quarter.
Summerside kept that momentum going into the second half with Patrick Lefrank scoring a touchdown in the third quarter but Summerside failed it's two point conversion attempt.
A Summerside interception followed by a touchdown gave them a flicker of hope, as they trailed 16-12.
Then Souris came back, as A.J. MacInnis made an interception and scored a touchdown, followed up by Jonathan Gallant grabbing a fumble and making it to the endzone. Summerside's final points came from a touchdown by Dakota Dawson and a subsequent two point conversion to end the game 31-20 Souris.
