Cornwall gets their first win of season: 42-20

SUMMERSIDE – The Cornwall Timberwolves recorded win number one while dealing the Summerside Cooke Insurance Clippers their second loss of the season in a 42-20 game Sunday afternoon in P.E.I. Tackle Football League action.

Timberwolves head coach Jamie Gosbee says getting some extra practice and the return of their quarterback made the difference for Cornwall after losing 28-0 to the Island Construction Colonels last week.

“Our line came together today,” Gosbee said. “That extra practice did a lot to solidify our offence and get our plays together.”

Timberwolves quarterback Phil Lanthier was no doubt the player of the game – as he ran in three touchdowns himself. Lantheir says Cornwall's strong defense kept things together until the team's offense started rolling.

“We needed to find a rhythm at first,” Lanthier said. “Once we found that rhythm our offense was really strong.”

Clippers acting head coach Aaron MacIsaac attributed the loss to the small number of players on the Summerside team.

“We're short on numbers and have to ask the boys to play both ways,” MacIsaac said.

He says the difference between the loss and a close game was Summerside's inability to stop quarterback Phil Lanthier running the ball in.

“We need to work on our run blocks. We get pushed around by fresh legs every play.”

The game's first quarter had Summerside's Alex Forrest getting a touchdown to make the game 7-0.

The second quarter went blow to blow, as Cornwall's Chris Dowbiggin had a touchdown along with Summerside's Curtis Wolfe to make it 14-7 at half time.

Then the winds shifted as Cornwall dominated the third quarter. Lanthier had two touchdowns, and Dowbiggin scored his second, along with Cornwall kicking the ball through the end zone to score an extra point making it 29-14.

In the fourth quarter, Lanthier scored his third touchdown of the game which was responded to by Summerside's Pat Lefrank - who's touchdown was followed by a failed extra point attempt. Cornwall's Mike Wolfe ended the game with a touchdown to make it 42-20 Cornwall.
